I hope this December finds you and your loved ones all very well. The holydays are upon us, and we are embracing them in R.E. through spirit, service, justice, and love. It is a special season when our culture focuses on generosity and care for strangers. We will be exploring these spiritual themes in R.E. through many venues, including at the annual Sock Hop, when we donate socks and warm goods to Urban Ministries, and at the Cookie Party, when we make and donate cookies to Urban Ministries’ Client Holiday Party. We are reaching out to homebound ERUUF members this season with cards and Poinsettias, and we will be lifting up radical hospitality and the power of Love in this year’s Christmas pageant, written by our own Paul Baerman.
December also includes advent, and I am experiencing a personal advent this month, waiting for my baby to arrive. He is due January 3! Thank you so much to the R.E. teachers who organized a baby shower for my partner Brian and me. We loved the scrapbook, which includes parenting advice from the R.E. children. Some of my favorite pieces of advice include: “A good mom buys healthy stuff for you,” “Choose a good name for the baby,” “Be overprotective,” “Don’t let them watch TV all day- make them go outside,” “Be serious in case there is a fire,” “Ask for help if you’re having a tough day,” “Don’t let the baby drive the car,” and “Canje it’s diper, geiv it ovcotoe” (avodcado). Brian and I will hold these words of wisdom close, and will cherish all the love shared with us and this coming baby. Many, many thanks, ERUUF. I am deeply grateful to be in this work and to raise a child in this open-hearted community.
I am planning to be away on family leave from January through March. We are blessed to have many big-hearted and brilliant members committed to the children and youth in this fellowship, and I have worked to put together a team of people here to support Religious Education while I'm away. However, there is one area we are in need of more support. We seek two R.E. Assistant Teachers for this spring, for our 9:15 Kindergarten class. Mary Davis and Susan Baylies are the lead R.E. teachers, but we need two adult assistants for a full teaching team. Spring R.E. runs from January 7-May 20 this year, so this means you would assist 9 Sundays at the 9:15 service. R.E. is fun, simple, and invaluable, and we need you. Please consider volunteering as an assistant for our 9:15 Kindergarten class this spring.
It is a joy and an honor to serve here, ERUUF. My deep gratitude for your love and baby blessings,
