 erformance work\, an anthem of contemporary America through a unique colla
 boration between acclaimed poet Jimmy Santiago Baca and jazz violin virtuo
 so Christian Howes under the direction of David Gonzalez.\nMain event is a
 t 7:30 p.m.\, with a reception to follow in the ERUUF Fellowship Hall. Eve
 nt ticket prices are $25 in advance or $30 at the door\, on the day of the

 \nAbout the Artists\nJimmy Santiago Baca is out on the road inspiring read
 ers\, writers\, students and people from all walks of life. His new book W
 hen I Walk Through That Door\, I Am: An Immigrant Mother’s Quest for Freed
 om\, which went on sale February 19\, 2019.\nInternationally renowned poet
  Jimmy Santiago Baca was born in Santa Fe\, New Mexico\, on January 2\, 19
 52. Abandoned by his parents at the age of two\, he lived with one of his 
 grandparents for several years before being placed in an orphanage. He wou
 nd up living on the streets\, and at the age of twenty-one he was convicte
 d on charges of drug possession and incarcerated. He served six years in p
 rison\, four of them in isolation. During this time\, Baca taught himself 
 to read and write\, and he began to compose poetry. A fellow inmate convin
 ced him to submit some of his poems to Mother Jones magazine\, then edited
  by Denise Levertov. Levertov printed Baca's poems and began corresponding
  with him\, eventually finding a publisher for his first book.\nImmigrants
  in Our Own Land\, Baca's first major collection\, was highly praised. In 
 1987\, his semi-autobiographical minor epic in verse\, Martin and Meditati
 ons on the South Valley\, received the American Book Award for poetry\, br
 inging Baca international acclaim and\, in 1989\, the Hispanic Heritage Aw
 ard in Literature. A self-styled 'poet of the people\,' Baca conducts writ
 ing workshops with children and adults at countless elementary\, junior hi
 gh and high schools\, colleges\, universities\, reservations\, barrio comm
 unity centers\, white ghettos\, housing projects\, correctional facilities
  and prisons from coast to coast. His most recent book\, When I Walk Throu
 gh That Door\, I Am\, portrays the experience of an immigrant mother facin
 g family separation\, abuse\, and ICE raids on the Southern border. (Sourc

 country that has too often marginalized Chicanos and other Latinos\,' said
  Mario T. García\, professor of Chicana and Chicano Studies and of history
  at UCSB. Poet Denise Levertov said “Baca writes with unconcealed passion 
 and manifests both an intense lyricism and that transformative vision whic
 h perceives the mythical and archetypal significance of life events.”\nJaz
 z violinist educator and composer\, Christian Howes was voted #1 in the Do
 wnbeat Critics Poll (“Rising Stars/Violin”)\, named among the top three ja
 zz violinists in the JazzTimes critics poll\, and nominated for Violinist 
 of the Year by the Jazz Journalist Association. He received the Residency 
 Partner Award through Chamber Music America\, earned a USArtists grant thr
 ough the Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation\, and was invited by the U.S. State 
 department to teach and perform as a cultural ambassador twice\, in Ukrain
 e and Montenegro. His release on Resonance Records\, “Southern Exposure” e
 arned recognition in the New York Times\, Wall Street Journal\, Downbeat\,
  Jazz Times\, as well as a six-night run at Lincoln Center.\nHis release\,
  “American Spirit” was named among the Best Jazz Albums of 2015 by the Huf
 fington Post. Howes is the founder of “Creative Strings\,'  a 501(c)(3) no
 n-profit organization with a mission to expand music education through the
  creation of online curriculum\, an annual summer conference\, and dozens 
 of visits to schools annually teaching improvisation\, contemporary styles
