Our discussion this month will be based on Steven Brill’s book The Death of Truth. Per the book jacket, this book asks, “How did we become a world where facts — shared truths — have lost their power to hold us together as a community, as a country, globally? How have we allowed the proliferation of alternative facts, hopes, even conspiracy theories, to destroy our trust in institutions, leaders, and legitimate experts?"

For those who haven’t read the book, the following videos can provide some background:

• This half-hour video (October 7, 2024: Steven Brill with The Pell Center) covers some of the key topics in the book, including some background on Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, which exempts platforms from any liability for postings.
