In Conversation with Rev. Jim Lewis, Minister of Lifespan Faith Development
Eric A. Hodges, Ministerial Transition Communication Team
Q: What is Rev. Lewis’ responsibility at ERUUF? And, what excites him about it?
Rev. Lewis is primarily responsible for our RE and adult programs, including covenant groups and
chalice circles. He will eventually move to coordination of pastoral care. As to what excites him about
this role, Rev. Lewis noted, “The balance of playfulness and presence.”
Q: What path led him to this position?
“I went into music education and discovered I loved working with children. When I went into seminary, I
expected to become a congregational minister, but along the way I had profound experiences in pastoral
care. In both cases, I felt a calling that pulled me on a different path than I had expected or intended.”
Another calling led him to ERUUF. “After seminary, I had intended to be in healthcare chaplaincy, but
when Rev. Jacqueline called, I thought about what I could give to a UU community in terms of pastoral
care and RE.”
Q: What would Rev. Lewis like the congregation to know about him?
“I am a horrible gardener so please don’t give me a plant, but I relax by playing farming games where I
can farm virtually. It’s relaxing to take care of my crops and animals.” As I think of the care Rev. Lewis
is providing to us, I find myself smiling as I think of him tending his virtual garden in his down time.
