Running from Sunday, October 20 to Sunday, November 24 are watercolor paintings by Martha Scotford. Based on direct observation painting outside, and on photographs — many from international travel. Martha takes inspiration from her surroundings, both urban and rural. Martha paints outside when she’s in Vermont and New Hampshire for the summer. And, when not in New England, Martha paints in downtown in Durham, where she lives. Okay

The vegetable paintings began with visits to farms and farmers markets. She experiments with levels of abstraction from these sources.

Some of these were painted quickly in the field, others were composed later with reference to the photos. And, some are “still life”groups that she sets up.

Martha took up watercolor painting when she retired from teaching design eleven years ago. It is a medium that she appreciates for its spontaneity, gestural possibilities, color subtleties, and constant challenges.
