In this season of celebrations and gatherings, the most precious gift we can offer others is our presence. This is where spiritual practice comes in, for it teaches us to remember something more, calls us back to ourselves, and invites us to cultivate new habits of the heart.

In the Christian tradition, today marks the first Sunday of Advent, a season that includes the four Sundays before Christmas, which was established around 590 CE. Each of the four Sundays in Advent has a theme associated with it – Hope, Peace, Joy and Love. Join with the ERUUF Christian Fellowship to explore Hope in this time when Hope may seem to be difficult to find.

The Rev. Mary Katherine Morn joined UUSC as President and Lead Executive Officer in 2018. Mary Katherine contributed to efforts for economic, racial, and social justice in Macon, Georgia at the Economic Opportunity Council/Headstart with the NAACP. She also worked deeply in the reproductive justice movement. In Nashville, Tennessee, she collaborated with the Interfaith Alliance and Industrial Areas Foundation. On this Sunday we honor our ancestors in ritual and candle lighting. All are encouraged to bring a photograph or small object of remembrance as together we construct a community altar to honor ancestors we call forward from memory.
