Durham CAN is sponsoring a community conversation about “The Police and the Community”  as a result of the tension that arose at the recent CAN Assembly between Police Chief Lopez & Pastor Mark Anthony Middleton.  As always with CAN, more is better, so please attend if you can/have interest and please share widely!

CAN has requested clarification from the Durham City Manager regarding the DPD support for two policies that seek to strengthen the written consent search policies. Both pastor Middleton and Police Chief Lopez will be in the panel.

Background: Durham CAN asked during its public meeting attended by 500+ people that Police Chief Jose Lopez affirm his commitment to requiring written consent before searching motorists, as well as two other policy reforms the Fayetteville Police Department has implemented to address racial profiling:

▪ That the officer conducting the stop and search must provide the driver of the vehicle with at least one reasonable factor implicating the driver or occupants in possible criminal activity.

▪ That traffic stops and searches based solely on the individual’s nervousness, prior criminal history or presence in a high-crime area would no longer be permitted – these factors would no longer be sufficient cause for search.
